Reading Inventions: Lasers, Microscopes and the Machine Age

Modern laboratories depend on machines that extend the human eye. In the twentieth century, James Hillier helped invent the electron microscope. Unlike the older optical microscope, this invention could magnify objects thousands of times their actual size, so researchers could examine structures that light alone could not reveal. Around the same period of scientific ambition, Ahmed H. Zewail pioneered a rapid laser technique that shows molecules inside atoms during chemical reactions. His work turned chemistry into a kind of slow-motion replay of events that last only femtoseconds.

These stories matter beyond the laboratory. Every invention begins as a plan, then becomes an apparatus — a machine dedicated to a precise task. Today, digital records, internet archives and search engines make older research easier to find, yet the core idea remains: technology is only as useful as the careful mind that designs and checks it. Students who study invention should notice both the tool and the method: observation, measurement, and the courage to improve what already exists.

How to find them: “Remembered as an …” needs a person noun → inventor. “Laboratory …” after create a powerful points to machine. “Scientific …” that can magnify is the invention. The verb before tiny objects is magnify. “On the internet for photos” is the module verb browse. Apparatus is a synonym of machine but no blank forces it if machine already fits.

Trap: Do not write invention for the person — that is inventor.

Your school blog asks: Which invention of the last century most improved scientific work? Write a short paragraph for other students. Name one invention or machine (for example the electron microscope, a laser tool, or another technology you know from class), explain two concrete benefits, and mention one risk or limit (cost, need for training, over-reliance on digital tools…). Use at least two linkers (Firstly, Moreover, However, Therefore…).

Model paragraph

In my view, the electron microscope is the invention that most improved modern scientific work. Firstly, this machine can magnify structures that ordinary light cannot show, so researchers study cells and materials with far more detail. Moreover, later technology linked such machines to digital screens and internet databases, which helps teams share images quickly across laboratories. However, the equipment is expensive and needs trained operators; without careful use, beautiful pictures may replace real understanding. Therefore, the best laboratories treat every invention as a tool that still depends on a curious, honest mind.

What the examiner rewards
- Task achievement: named invention/machine + two benefits + one limit.
- Cohesion: clear linkers that mark addition and contrast.
- Lexical range: invention, machine, technology, digital, magnify.
- Accuracy: consistent present tense for general truths.

Trap: A list of famous names without explaining how the invention helps scores poorly. Stay on scientific work, not a holiday story about a gadget.

Méthode / Automatismes

For an EN-READ task: skim for the invention names and the contrast (optical vs electron; ordinary eye vs machine). Underline numbers and comparisons. Quote only words that are on the page.

Pièges classiques

A common mistake is to confuse the two scientists: Zewail is linked to the laser / femtochemistry idea; Hillier to the electron microscope. Another trap is answering vocabulary from general knowledge (robot, computer) when the passage already supplies machine / apparatus.
