Lifelong Learning and Ability-Based Grouping

Idée directrice

Modern educational reforms shift away from rigid age-based structures. In schools like Bridgemary, students are grouped by ability rather than age to tackle underachievement. Similarly, Lifelong Learning allows adults to continue their education starting from adulthood to meet their vocational needs. It is crucial to master word formation (suffixes like -hood, -ment) and avoid confusing lookalike words like vocation and vacation.

Reading: ability groups and second chances

7 questionsCorrigé masqué

Reading comprehension. Read the passage, then answer the questions.

At a pioneer secondary school on the coast, the headmistress replaced mixed-ability year groups with mixed-age classes organised by level. Before allocation, every student sat a short assessment in literacy and numeracy. High achievers moved faster through the curriculum, while low achievers received extra support instead of repeating a whole year of material they already knew. Teachers claimed the scheme helped them tackle underachievement without labelling children as failures.

In the evening, the same building hosts adult education. Workers who left school early return to complete vocational modules. One electrician said lifelong learning gave meaning to his career: he could update his skills and prepare for a new qualification. The project is not confined to teenagers; it treats education as a path that can restart in adulthood whenever ambition returns.

1. True or false? Justify with a short quotation.

  1. Students are placed only according to their date of birth.
  2. Weaker pupils are given additional help rather than a full year of pure repetition.
  3. Adult courses in the building are limited to people under eighteen.

2. Answer the questions.

  1. Which two skills are tested before students are allocated?
  2. What benefit does the electrician mention?

3. Vocabulary. Match each word from the text with its meaning.

  1. scheme → a) plan · b) holiday · c) uniform
  2. vocational → a) related to a job · b) related to holidays · c) related to sport only

1. True / false
1. F — Groups follow level: “mixed-age classes organised by level” / “replaced mixed-ability year groups” (age alone is not the criterion).
2. T“low achievers received extra support instead of repeating a whole year of material they already knew.”
3. F“The project is not confined to teenagers” / evening “adult education” for workers.

2. Comprehension
1. Literacy and numeracy.
2. He can update his skills and prepare for a new qualification (lifelong learning also gave meaning to his career).

3. Vocabulary
1. schemea) plan
2. vocationala) related to a job

Method: For T/F, refuse answers that sound plausible but are not in the text (e.g. inventing uniforms or pure age streaming).

Writing: age groups or ability groups?

1 questionCorrigé masqué

Writing — one paragraph (10–12 lines).

Your English class is debating this statement: “Schools should group students by ability rather than by age.” Write one balanced paragraph for the class blog: present one argument for the idea, one argument against, and finish with your own opinion in one clear sentence. Use at least two linkers (Although, However, Furthermore, In my view…).

Model paragraph

Grouping learners by ability rather than age can help teachers tackle underachievement more precisely. High achievers progress without boredom, while low achievers receive targeted support after a fair assessment in literacy and numeracy. Furthermore, mixed-age classes may teach cooperation across ages when the scheme is carefully managed. However, critics fear that labels damage confidence and that friendship groups built on age will break. Although ability streams look efficient on paper, they can create social distance between pupils who share the same corridor. In my view, schools should assess regularly and offer flexible groups, but they should never treat a level as a permanent identity.

What the examiner rewards
- Balance: one for + one against + a personal close (not three advantages only).
- Discourse markers: contrast and stance (Furthermore, However, Although, In my view).
- Topic vocabulary: ability, assessment, high / low achievers, scheme, underachievement.
- Accuracy: controlled complex sentences; avoid pure translation from Arabic word order.

Trap: Ending with “Education is important” adds nothing. The last sentence must take a position on ability versus age grouping.

Do not confuse vocation and vacation. Examiners frequently use them in multiple-choice or fill-in-the-blank sections to test your attention to detail. Remember: Vocation = Job, Vacation = Holiday.
